Military Hovercrafts – There is a tendency for the military to want the biggest of everything because biggest is best; but a new generation of hovercraft exploiting carbon fibre and Kevlar composites / HDPE provides opportunities for smaller lighter patrol hovercraft that can shift more weight per dollar than conventional military hovercraft.
Large military hovercraft are very expensive and heavy, so a simple way to compare the effective payload carried is to divide the price (millions) by the number of hovercraft purchased, e.g. For the price of a typical large military hovercraft, perhaps 50 smaller combat hovercraft could be purchased – when you add up the number of men or weight of payload that can be carried by 50 combat hovercraft, it will exceed the weight and number of men that can be carried by the larger hovercraft. Why? Because hovercraft are weight sensitive, and large military hovercraft are heavy. One large hovercraft patrolling 300 miles of border may take hours to respond to terrorist activity such as the Mumbai massacre but smaller combat hovercraft can be positioned every 20 miles or so to deter threats, and respond much faster. Divide the budget for one military hovercraft, and purchase smaller combat hovercraft for superior defence capability. See images at
