Personal / Commercial Hovercraft – Hov Pod SPX TCC 120HP
Hovercrafts for Sale – the Hov Pod SPX TCC 120HP is the first production hovercraft to be manufactured from High Density Polyethylene or HDPE. The TCC version is lighter than the previous SPX model which stopped production in 2010.
This model is extremely strong and highly buoyant, whereas most personal hovercraft are manufactured from very thin glass fibre.
Hovercraft weight versus durability
Hovercraft are weight sensitive vehicles, and personal hovercraft tend to be very lightweight. Glass fibre hovercraft can be extremely thin and lack durability – they look great, but do not last many seasons, and can be difficult and expensive to repair.
Boats are made from thicker hulls – push your thumb against a glass fibre boat and it will appear rigid, but push your thumb against a glass fibre hovercraft hull, and you will find that the glass fibre is much thinner, it flexes – it has to be thin and lightweight because hovercraft are weight sensitive. Hovercraft are expected to fly over any flat surface so thin glass fibre hovercraft often have a short lifespan – one rock on the mud could crack a hull and spoil your day.
Cheaper personal hovercraft tend to have under-powered lawn mower engines that are uprated or modified – any modification to an engine with probably make the engine warranty invalid, so always check if full warranty is provided.
The Hov Pod SPX TCC 120HP is powered by a Weber Automotive high power to low weight engine manufactured by robots in Germany. Hov Pod have been using this engine since 2009 – we previously tried and rejected engines still used by other manufacturers due to reliability and support issues. Weber Automotive offer superb after sales service, and excellent manuals and documentation, and full 12 months warranty. This engine is supplied with full remote diagnostic software to enable internal data information from 9 sensors.
Essential areas to check are whether fast rotating parts like the fan guards are properly guarded to the front and rear of the fan assembly – hovercraft have fan blades that rotate at up to 2000 rpm, and will have no problem chopping off a few fingers if they are allowed to access the duct area. Consider the safety of yourself, your family, your passengers and any bystanders. The Hov Pod design focuses on safety and ease of operation – we fit front and rear fan guards – who would even consider allowing a rotating fan to run unguarded in a public place!
Hovercraft payload and price comparisons
When hovercraft start on water, they create a pressure wave known as the Hump, all hovercraft generally lift 50% more weight when starting on land than they can lift when starting on water. It is important to drill down in the specifications to establish what the on-water payload capability is, because if you are over-weight when starting on water, it could be a long swim home!
The Hov Pod SPX TCC 120HP can lift up to 325 Kgs or 718 pounds from an on-water start, or up to 487 kgs or 1077 pounds when starting on land.
Number of seats
It is dangerous to ask hovercraft suppliers how many seats a hovercraft model has got – weight is important, so some passengers have eaten more pies than others, your passenger weight may exceed your on-water payload capability. If a hovercraft fails to “get over hump” you may need to call out the emergency services to get back home again. Hovercraft are not boats, auxiliary outboard engines don’t work!
