Floodwater contaminated by microbes may contain bacteria and viruses. Exposure to these pathogens can cause illnesses ranging from mild gastritis to serious diseases such as dysentery, infectious hepatitis, and severe gastroenteritis.

As English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, wrote in the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,   Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink.  (To which one might add)  It’s the microbes in the water that make flooded waters, stink.

The traditional method to assist post flood relief efforts is to have some highly expensive helicopter to drop bottles of drinking water – once it’s drunk, it’s gone, and it’s back to the brown stuff. Water is heavy, so why carry it? – use hovercraft to distribute LIFESAVER units  LifeSaver Systems produce ultra-filtration systems that filter out contaminants. The smallest bacteria are about 200 nanometres in size, the viruses are about 25 nanometres. The holes in the LIFESAVER membranes are 15 nanometres so nothing gets through. Check out the video.
